ND Online Gaming

ND Online gaming provides a safe space for neurodivergent children to connect with their neurokin. Our groups consist of 2 to 5 participants at a time, providing support to help each individual work towards their goals. We focus on encouraging social engagement/participation with peers, fostering community involvement, and building and maintaining friendships and connections. Our aim is to support participants in creating new connections, exploring new hobbies, and safely interacting within the online community while advancing various skills and developmental goals. Skilled facilitators and support workers are present throughout each session to guide participants in achieving these objectives.

Why do we use gaming to help achieve this?

Neurodivergent (ND) children often bond and engage easier through shared interests, and gaming supports various developmental goals:

  • Enhanced Focus and Attention: Many games require sustained attention and can help children practice focusing on tasks for longer periods. This can be particularly beneficial for children with attention difficulties.

  • Problem-Solving Skills: Video games often present challenges and puzzles that require critical thinking and strategy, fostering problem-solving abilities and creative thinking.

  • Social Interaction: Multiplayer games provide opportunities for interaction, helping children develop communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to navigate social situations in a low-pressure environment. These games can foster connections with peers, which can be particularly helpful for individuals with social anxiety or autism.

  • Routine and Structure: Games often have predictable patterns and rules, which can provide a sense of routine and security that many neurodivergent children find comforting.

  • Emotional Regulation: Engaging with video games can help children learn to manage frustration and cope with failure in a safe setting, providing valuable lessons in resilience. Story-driven games can provide insights into personal experiences and feelings, allowing players to reflect on their lives and emotions through the lens of a character.

  • Sensory Engagement: Many games offer rich sensory experiences, which can be stimulating and enjoyable for children, allowing them to engage with visual and auditory elements in a controlled way.

  • Goal Setting and Achievement: Video games often include clear objectives and rewards, helping children set and achieve goals, which can boost self-esteem and motivation.

  • Safe Exploration: Games can allow for exploration of complex themes and scenarios in a safe environment, enabling children to experiment with different identities and situations without real-world consequences.  Online games, in particular, make social activities and community participation more accessible, especially for those who may struggle with traditional face-to-face settings.

  • Motivation and Engagement: The interactive nature of games can motivate individuals to participate in social activities, making the process more engaging and enjoyable.

Overall, when chosen thoughtfully, video games can be a powerful tool for learning and development for neurodivergent children.
